Francis Picabia
Portrait of a Woman, c. 1935, oil on canvas, 73 x 60.5 cm, private collection.
Francis Picabia was a French painter, poet, and typographist, associated with both the Dada and Surrealist art movements. He started with painting landscapes in the manner of impressionists . Then, influenced by Fauvism and Cubism, he tried to combine both movements and created bright-colored Cubists pictures unlike the monotone paintings of Cubism founders. In 1915 Picabia, together with Marcel Duchamp and painters of American Avant-garde movement, formed the NY society of Dadaists.
