Happy birthday to Gustav Klimt, born on this day in 1862.
Don’t miss a rare opportunity to see Klimt’s “Frauenbildnis (Portrait of a Woman)" in Gallery 158, on loan to the Museum from The Lewis Collection. Klimt began this piece in 1917 but it was discovered unfinished in the artist’s studio after his death in February 1918—you’ll notice this work is sketchier than most of Klimt’s densely decorated canvases. It is thought to be his third work to portray Maria (“Ria”) Munk, the daughter of Alexander and Aranka Pulitzer Munk, who had shot herself in 1911 at the age of 24, in despair over a lover.
