The Mexican artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera were married in 1929, after a bit of a whirlwind affair. Kahlo first approached Rivera in 1927 whilst he was working on a mural at the Public Ministry of Education. From then, Rivera became Kahlo’s chief advocate and encouraged her to pursue her artistic career. But their marriage was a turbulent one, with numerous fights and affairs, and the couple divorced in 1939. They remarried a year later, but the partnership remained unsettled.
