Huichol yarn painting: Circa 1999 4ft. x 4ft

The Huichol people (who refer to themselves as Wixáritari “the people”) live in the Sierra Madre Occidental range in the Mexican states of Nayarit, Jalisco, Zacatecas, and Durango. Their cultural practices include animism, peyote ritual, and shamanism. Their yarn paintings (and bead paintings) are made by pressing dyed yarn into a substrate made of beeswax and pine pitch.
