honeymuse:

Bernardino Luini

Portrait of a Lady

Black chalk and coloured crayons heightened with pastel.

414 x 285 mm

In the 16th century pastel was mainly used as a subtle way to heighten a drawing, like in this study Luini worked for his Young Woman painting. Luini learned and amplified this technique from working together with Leonardo Da Vinci. The slight touches of pink and white for the flesh and the yellow and brown for the head bring such vitality to this black chalk drawing.

Another with yellow & brown pastel hair:

Bernardino Luini

Head of a Woman

Black chalk heightened with pastel.
